I confess that my obsession with this device was born during a horrible case of insomnia. I was averaging 10 hours of sleep a week and as a result became a late-night infomercial junkie. I'm not kidding; I bought all kinds of ridiculous stuff as the weeks went on and I got less and less sleep. Luckily some concerned friends staged an intervention and all of the purchases were returned.
But during this infomercial addiction, my television introduced me to Ron Popeil and his Showtime Rotisserie Oven. As curious as I was about the device, I didn't buy it because frankly, I have a hard time trusting Mr. Popeil. His products look gimmicky and cheap on television so I fought off the urge to buy the SRO for two years. I owe Mr. Popeil an apology. I've now had my SRO for almost 10 years and I haven't so much as replaced the light bulb in it.
Everything promised about this device is true: it cooks everything faster and produces flavorful, juicy meats. The SRO does not take up a lot of space and can be used on the hottest summer day without turning your kitchen into an inferno. You can pause rotation to sear meats or just have it rotate with no heat at all. The highest my model goes is 3 hours for cooking. There is even one bonus that Mr. Popeil did not mention: It can perfectly cook meat from a total frozen state in 20-30 minutes, sometimes less depending on the size of the meat. I have the original one, which fits comfortably in a 16x17x19-inch space, but now they have various sizes ranging from a more compact one to one big enough to roast a 25 lbs turkey. They also come in black and white colors in addition to the platinum. There is one with a turn dial, but I prefer the digital one.
Where to buy: stores such as Walmart and Target, but I recommend getting it directly from the Popeil online store because the odds are you will get something free with the purchase. http://www.popeilfamilystore.com/rotisseries.html
